Lithium Ion batteries banned from recycling

Landfill Ban for Lithium-Ion Batteries

In 2023, the North Carolina General Assembly passed S.L. 2023-137, which prohibits the disposal of lithium-ion batteries in landfills or incinerators. Starting December 1, 2026, all lithium-ion batteries will be banned from North Carolina landfills. While DEACS has existing resources for supporting community collection programs, additional resources may be coming to further aid in this transition.

If you would like assistance establishing or expanding programs to collect these resources, please reach out to Alex Miller at (919) 707-8190. You can also bookmark our new battery landing page, which will be updated regularly with new information and resources to support collection efforts.
