Videos about what we do down here...so much to do, so little time.
For a tiny town, noted years ago as "The Sailing Capital of North Carolina", what goes on in and around Oriental is a celebration of this beautiful setting we share, the vast Neuse River, widest in the nation, at our front door. People ask, "what do you do in that tiny town?". Well, here's a way to show it...friends, neighbors, strangers and professionals have posted videos about the goings-on in and around our small town. Enjoy, we sure do.

Out and about Town
From GeronimoBarra
But the reason the town is named Oriental is because Miss Becky (Midyette) suggested that name after seeing the name plate of boat she'd seen on the outer banks that had foundered and the name plate was recovered. They were looking for a unique name for the town which was to have a post office. They sure came up with a unique name. For not only is there no other Oriental in North Carolina, there's none in the whole US of A.

July 4th Croakerfest
The first Saturday of July each year is the Croakerfest in Oriental. A Croaker is a local fish, and the festival originated years ago as a community fish-fry. It all starts on Friday with foods and a street dance. Then Saturday there's a very eclectic home-town parade, kids games, foods, activities, a small boat regatta, and the evening ends with fireworks over Oriental Harbor.

New Year Dragon Run
Every new years Eve one, or sometime more, dragons wander down Hodges Street at the Oriental Harbor. Sometimes hard to know when, but residents greet them with noisemakers as they work with the dragons to drive all the evil spirits from the coming year.
